What is the role of health care reform in shifting the focus from a disease-oriented health care system toward one of wellness and prevention?
The role of the health care reform in shifting the focus to a health care system that promotes wellness and prevention rather than a disease oriented one is to stop diseases before they start, and for all Americans to strive to be healthy and fit. It is so critical for Americans to be healthy and vital in order to be productive and innovative for our nation’s future. The National Prevention Strategy is part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and is intended to help in the shift of the nation’s health-care system to one that is focused on prevention and wellness (Benjamin, 2011). The shift to this preventative focus of health care can lead to cost savings but also to saving and improving lives.
How does nursing fit into this shift?
Nursing fits into this shift of the medical care system that is focused on wellness and prevention in a variety of ways. Nurses will ultimately be tasked with much of the education and reinforcement of preventative and wellness healthcare. Through the use of evidence-based recommendations, nurses will need to encourage patients to receive preventative services. Nurses working in public health will be able to educate and inspire more people to engage in healthy lifestyles in order to live longer lives (The Role, 2017). There are three types of prevention that nurses will use on a regular basis depending on the environment in which they work, these include primary prevention, secondary prevention, and tertiary prevention (The Role, 2017).
