What Each Term Actually Means

The words "spaying" and "neutering" are sometimes used interchangeably in casual conversation, but they describe two distinct surgical procedures targeting different sexes. Understanding the difference helps pet owners prepare for the right conversation with their veterinarian.

Spaying (technically called an ovariohysterectomy) is performed on female animals. The surgeon removes both the ovaries and, in most cases, the uterus through an incision in the abdomen. A less common variation, called an ovariectomy, removes only the ovaries. Both approaches eliminate the ability to reproduce and remove the hormones produced by those organs.

Neutering (technically called castration or orchiectomy) is performed on male animals. The testicles are removed through a small incision near the scrotum. For female animals, spaying eliminates the risk of pyometra — a serious, potentially fatal uterine infection that is relatively common in intact (unspayed) older females. Recovery: What to Expect and How They Differ

Recovery is one of the clearest practical differences between the two procedures.

Because spaying involves an abdominal incision, females typically need 10 to 14 days of restricted activity while the incision heals internally and externally. Jumping, running, and rough play should be avoided during this window. Most veterinarians will recommend an e-collar (commonly called a cone) to prevent licking at the incision site. A follow-up appointment to check healing is standard.

Neutering recovery is generally faster. Males usually return to normal energy levels within 3 to 5 days, though vets still recommend limiting strenuous activity for about a week. The incision is smaller and external, but licking can still cause infection, so an e-collar is typically recommended here as well.

Signs that warrant a call to your veterinarian include excessive swelling, redness, discharge from the incision, lethargy lasting more than 24–48 hours post-surgery, or signs the animal is in significant pain.
