These checks work across species, though breed conformation affects what you see. Naturally deep-chested breeds like Greyhounds show more visible structure at a healthy weight; heavily muscled breeds like Bulldogs may look stocky even when fit. Metabolism slows as animals age. A senior dog or cat typically needs fewer calories than the same animal did at two years old, even with similar activity levels. Aging pets have shifting nutritional needs that often go unaddressed when food portions stay frozen in an earlier life stage.
